Two church-school girls on the stoop,
laughing about the boys,
trading confidences: Then bleeding
in the crossfire of rival gangs.
On the waters of an alien coast,
four Bible-passers
taken by pirates: Then torn
in the crossfire of rival bands.
In the suburbs of an uncivil
war we call the fighting,
a family at prayers: Then silenced
in the crossfire of rival armies.
Perhaps, then, it is true:
The Devil rules the world,
and no good things go,
unpunished.
