The Random Life

The words go in one ear &
Out the other streamin’ thru
Unconsciousness washin’
Away some memories I no
Longer need makin’ way for
New thoughts I no longer
Believe & pickin’ & choosin’
Ain’t got nothin’ to do with it
What I learn right now don’t
Help me yesterday always
A day short & a dollar late
Burnin’ shadows at both
Ends still don’t help me see
What’s waitin’ up ahead
Don’t matter ‘cause I can’t
Avoid it anyway trapped in
Illusions of destiny at least
I’ve had my say you can’t
Collect in Heaven what you
Didn’t bet in Hell too bad
The fortune teller’s closed
On Mondays

His poetry has appeared in ArtCrimes, The City, the Deep Cleveland Junkmail Oracle, Fuck Poetry, and the Cartier Street Review. His chapbook Transitory Innocence was published by NightBallet Press in early 2013. Explore more of his work at octoberconspiracy.blogspot.com.

On becoming a friend

Casing yesterday’s dream
Like a cello on a rainy day
Scraping the pavement for
A bit of inspiration a foot
Print left undisturbed in the
Cement duly initialed and
Paraphrased of sentiment
Hopefully heading in the
Right direction asking the
Right question of a stranger
You just met for the first
Time & will never meet
Under that guise again

Natural selection

The world’s incoherent
Everything’s all reality
That just ain’t real only
Muggin’ for the camera
Then grabbin’ the cash
Violence is the new art
& actors can’t act only
Look good when they
Get their heads lopped
Off or get bit on the neck
By a beautiful vampire
Can’t even touch music
No more comes thru a
Computer can’t recall
Any memorable tunes
Since John Martyn died
& it used to be ‘I don’t
inhale’ now it’s ‘I don’t
swallow’ & a gallon of
Gas costs as much as
A can of coffee used
To cost / screw it / I’ll
Go buy me a bottle of
Water with maybe a
Little left over for air

Gettin’ back to this

Not Quite a Koan

Writing a poem’s like doing

Origami bending the paper

To your will not with fingers

But w/ink fashioning a some

Thing out of a minute ago

Nothing a brief bit of time

Out of a life unaware of how

Little is left / leaving behind

More than a pool of fear

Inspired piss or violence

Inflicted blood more than

The vomit of late night’s

Revelry or the tears of a

Much dreaded diagnosis

Almost as much as a stain

On a sheet where love had

Recently lain & wallowed

In the shadow of Zen

The tree

No wisdom
Just luck &
Fertile soil
& the care
Of a woman
& sometimes
I cry for her
But not for

The tree

Radio
by Kevin Eberhardt

Seems we’re gettin’ ahead of ourselves

Puttin’ the cart before the donkey endin’

Up right where we started ‘cause you

Can’t trust what you can’t touch it’s all

Smoke & delusion hearsay & rumor &

Hidin’ behind words to say what you

Mean with a mouth belongs to some

One else in the War of the Worlds we

Are the aliens & there is no secret

Weapon only an ‘on’ & ‘off’ switch

Quake
by Kevin Eberhardt

The world’s getting tired

& blaming it all on us the

Cracks in her façade like

Makeup on an old whore

With blood on the thighs

Of innocence & tears in

The eye of the storm &

Nothing left to sacrifice

To the violence in our

Prayers

Frost sighed

Walking home late one night
Took a shortcut thru the wood
Saw an old man sitting on a
Tree stump starin’ straight at
Me ‘til I got close enough & he
Turned away revealing a hole
Like a window in the side of
His head admitting me into
His myth of life as an ancient
Vision of the world of an old
Woman rockin’ in her chair
Forming words w/out meaning
& yet I understood & I noticed
I was crying & I noticed I was
Alone walking home late one
Night my breath collected
Forming galaxies of
Understanding

Not yet dead

So much still excites me
The hint of a breast with

Holding breath the sound
Of pleasure cupped in

Nervous hand the touch
Of an autumn wind on a

Summer cheek the blush
Of embarrassed longing
