Last Train from the City

They must have been stoned to move
so slowly
that molecules of still objects
buzzed around them,
the grey aluminum wall of the train
vibrating
behind their kiss.

His upper lip stretched
taffy-like
before her lips released it,
their bodies swayed
as the train jolted,
and her lower lip retracted
from between his.

The kiss continued
for miles
beginning under city lights,
then further and further
through suburbs then fields

until a haggard woman,
child on knee
baby in stroller
barked, “Hey!
There are kids here!”

ruining it
for the rest of us
wistful
and bitter
because we’d never been kissed
like that.

Sleep

They would scrawl their hate on my message board
nightly after you left–bitch, slut, cunt, whore,
never bothering to ask me the truth,
more fun to make up rumors of uncouth acts behind
closed doors.
Why else would he slink
to her, all hours of the night?
Who would think
without knowing your story of a lost
little boy, no parents–days of exhaustion
eighteen years later, afraid to sleep
alone, so sure history would repeat
itself.  I’d hold you close, shhhshhh to keep
you quiet and feel eerily complete
with you, sound asleep, cradled on my chest.
Of all the gifts I’ve given, giving you sleep
was best.
